Earlier this week, a few enthusiasts rented out South Florida's excellent PBIR to run a few friendly "grudge match" drag races. Among the attendees were one crisp, white Switzer R900 GTR and one screaming yellow, twin-turbo Gallardo.

Let me give you a quick rundown of the video: the cars line up, the lights turn green, and they go.

Over a 16 year production run, Lamborghini built 2042 Countach supercars.

I will admit that the word "iconic" has been horribly overused since Superman Returns, but in terms of exotic sportscars and teenage lust, very little compares to Lamborghini's iconic Countach. The Countach is an icon in the same sense that the venerated images of the saints are, mounted on walls by true believers, and looked to for hope and inspiration.

This post, however, is not about the Countach. It's about that car's corporate grandson - the Murcielago.

The Murcielago brings to mind a particular saying that I heard in some cartoon or movie years ago. The source never stuck with me, but the message did, which is to say: everything valuable is rare, but not everything rare is valuable.

Which brings me to today's announcement from Lamborghini (via Autoblog).

Italian Super sportscar manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini proudly celebrates a historic event: an LP 670-4 SuperVeloce version of its current flagship V12 Murciélago, carrying series number 4,000, has just left Lamborghini's factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese, destined for a Chinese buyer.

That's right. There are 4000 (four-thousand) Lamborghini Murcielagos running around out there, and all of them were built in the last 9 years.

SO, I'd like to ask: how many is too many?

Would you call a Volkswagen Passat W8 a more exotic car than a Murcielago? There are more Murcis out there now than W8 Passats.

I'm not sure how that line about everything valuable being rare plays out in the case of the Murcielago, but I can tell you this: 4000 seems like a lot of cars ... and there are even more Lamborghini Gallardos out there than there are Muricelagos.

In a few short months, the current batch of Lamborghinis will be more common than Fox-bodied Mustang Cobras, 4th-gen SS Camaros, and Buick GNXs. We are living in a world where late-model Lambos probably outnumber street-worthy US Lancias and Alfas by a wide margin, and yet ...

... I don't know, exactly, but that charging bull on the hood just doesn't seem so special anymore.

Congratulations, then, to Lamborghini, for making our icons a little more ordinary.

Oh ho HO!

See that, kiddies? Before you dismiss these little sketches as the work of a very talented fan, you should know that Luxoflux is the company responsible for the Transformers console games, and that the movie's producers are heavily involved in every aspect of the movie's merchandise.

SO, what we have here is honest-to-goodness Transformer concept art for the new Revenge of the Fallen console game, and it is exactly what it looks like: a Decepticon that transforms into a Mercedes SLR McLaren 722 GT.

Hoo-boy! I gotta sit down.

As my regular reader will no doubt tell you, there are very few things in life that get me right in the britches. Chief among these, however, are Transformers movies and McLaren's SLR GT. I know Bay's movies take a lot of flak for their "plots" and the SLR takes a lot of flak for being a bit portly, but the fact remains that both the films and the car are technological marvels, and something as crude as a semi-tractor would have a tough time with this particular robotic baddie.

That one turns into a Lamborghini Reventon.

Excited, yet?

Both of these hyper-exotic Transformers are labelled "Stunticon", which (in the cartoons) was the name given to a group of especially psychotic Decepticons who combined to form the giant Menasor, made up of a Porsche, Lambo (Breakdown, above), an F1 car, and a wicked-bad, jet-black semi-tractor.

Now, I haven't seen any Menasor concept art (yet), but I can tell you this already: I cannot wait for Transformers 3.

It took me more than a full year to reach Sunshine's 100th post, and less than 5 months to get to 200. With all that's happened in the past 100 posts, I think it's time to sit back and reflect a bit.

First, Sunshine has begun to enjoy some real successes, with references on the Scooterscoop and Neatorama (two of my all-time favorite sites), as well as something approaching a regular readership!

Second, my recent coverage of the 2009 Palm Beach Supercar douchebags produced another, more personal sort of victory for me just this morning! Go click over there, and see if you catch it.

Right, there, in the comments, Alex writes "I heard Alex Papas from South Florida Toys brought over 100 Lamborghini's and Ferrari's to the Pam Beach Supercar weekend he is the one that should talked about. He puts on the the best events in South Florida."

That's right, people. Alex Papas wrote that he'd heard (somewhere!) that Alex Papas had brought over 100 Lambos to "the PAM Beach Supercar weekend" .. then practically DARES me to call him out on his bad spelling and crap grammar by saying HE is the one who should be talked about!

Ha-ha, HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

OK, here's the deal: Papas really did bring 100 cars to the event, and this year's show would have SUCKED without his involvement ... but that referring to himself in the third-person baloney HAS GOT TO GO.

SO, there's your 5 minutes of "fame" on Sunshine ... is it all you dared hope?

Amazing.

As exciting as all this sounds, however, I should point out that it's not all cashews and honeydews here at Sunshine. Indeed, I was recently told that I should tone down "that nerdy bullsh*t" and get back to writing "more badass sh*t".

Well, you can bet I have a response to THAT, too!
