tym switzer brings it to the panamera

PUT THE BABY SEAT IN AND GO GO GO

The crew at Ohio-based Switzer Performance call themselves turbo-tuning specialists, and have spent the last several years driving the point home at events like the Texas Mile, the GTR Nationals, and Russia's Moscow Unlimited mile-long drag races, where Switzer-tuned cars have dominated. Now, however, Tym Switzer is adding Porsche's Panamera to his company's ever-expanding roster of exotic tuning platforms.

After chasing down Bugattis and Koenigseggs with Switzer's hard-core street beasts, Porsche's luxury sedan might seem like an odd choice for a “What's next?” type of car – but Tym doesn't see it that way. “Porsche gave the Panamera a robust, twin-turbo, direct-injected V8, and it was easy to recognize that they'd left a great deal of room to work with. Working with our technology partners in developing this P680 hardware, I believe we've made full use of this, and were able to build the type of Panamera many of us hoped Porsche would build.”

To that end, the new Switzer P680 delivers 680 hp on readily available premium pump fuel, along with more than 200 additional lbs-ft of torque available across the rpm range. At the wheels.

Despite the added power, however, the new turbos help maintain drivability by delivering boost response as good as or better than stock. “You can see how responsive the new turbos are with the dyno sheets (attached), and you can definitely feel it for yourself from inside the car. The throttle response is immediate and incredible.” Turbos built with custom billet compressor wheels featuring advanced aero-profiles designed to deliver optimum performance throughout the operational range of this engine/cooling package can be thanked for the sacrifice-free performance gains. - and all of these performance gains are made through the factory catalytic converters and stock exhaust system if desired. “We really wanted to give the Panamera a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde type of feel. We ended up with David Banner/Incredible Hulk, but the idea is the same: maintain a stock, daily-driver personality all the way up until the fury is released with the right pedal to the floor. I want to say 'You wouldn't like it when it's angry.' but you would. It's a rush!”

Next up on Switzer's tuning agenda was the Panamera's intercooler system (below).

CHILL MAN

“Our original prototypes were based on requests from clients in desert climates, so it was important to increase cooling efficiency in order to provide the kind of consistent power delivery and reliability our clients expect from Switzer products,” says Tym. “By adding our upgraded intercoolers (significantly larger capacity and heat-sink, compared to stock) and increasing the efficiency of the turbocharger system, we were able to help the engine make more power, while putting fewer loads on some key components. Better load-management across the components means a longer part life, to some extent, so – while it's possible to extract a great deal of power from the stock components by pushing them up to or over the edge of their limits, asking someone to live with a car that's always on the edge of reliability is unrealistic. Knowledgeable clients won't stand for it.”

Switzer's P680 PKG, then, promises huge performance gains in an everyday package, with 4 doors and intimidating speed from Switzer's comprehensive upgrades – and it's all tied together with Switzer's Siemens ECU tuning. “Getting the software right was key. There are no 'tricked' sensors or piggy-back systems spliced into a very expensive electronic system. No short-cuts, in other words. This one's done right.”

Switzer claims the P680 Panamera is capable of mid 3 second 0-60 sprints, and the capability to perform 60-130 mph runs in low 8 second range, with a top speed well in excess of 215 mph (350 km). Pricing for the P680 starts at approx. 22000 USD. Contact Switzer Performance for more.

switzer ups the tranny ante

RED IS SEXXXY

Tuners everywhere rejoiced when Porsche introduced an upgraded Tiptronic transmission with its 997 Turbo models. The five-speed automatic/manual, built for Porsche by German neighbors Mercedes-Benz, is capable of handling as much as seven hundred horsepower in some applications ... and, for most tuners, that's all the capacity they will ever need.

For Ohio-based Switzer Performance, however, 700 hp is far from enough. “We first noticed the limitations of the 997 Tiptronic with our P700 (l4) PKG, which, pushed hard on certain high-octane fuels, can cause slipping in the trans.,” explains Tym Switzer, owner and chief engineer of Switzer Performance. “When we released our P800 kit for the 997 Turbos, which makes over eight hundred horsepower, we were forced to limit sales to manual-transmission cars. This didn’t satisfy the customers who wanted the kind of ultimate straight-line performance that the Tiptronic can offer, and – to be frank - it didn’t satisfy us.”

After spending a considerable amount of time reprogramming Porsche's transmission control unit (TCU) software to increase the torque limits, Switzer realized that effectively putting more than seven hundred horsepower through the Tip cars would require something more than a software-based solution.

Working with development partners in the US and Europe, Switzer disassembled, upgraded, and rebuilt the Tiptronic transmission to meet customer demands for higher hp projects. The first builds produced transmissions that were stronger and sharper than the factory unit, but not strong enough to contain Tym's hard-hitting P800. This final effort, however, Switzer and his European counterparts pulled out all the stops: additional clutches eliminate slippage, additional friction surfaces ensure more efficient power delivery, a modified valve body to improve shift speed, and (last, but not least) another round of transmission programming which enables the Tiptronic to make the most of its uprated internals.

MORE STACK HEIGHT FTW

On its maiden voyage, the new 997 Turbo P800 Tiptronic blasted from 0-60 mph in a scant 2.8 seconds. On standard tires. With standard air pressure. On pump gas.

Subsequent tests confirm that Switzer had produced one of the quickest daily-driver Porsches in history - and Tym isn’t shy about using the “B-word” in discussing the car’s performance, either. “These cars have Bugatti performance from 0-60. We’re still perfecting the calibrations, but we expect our clients will go Veyron hunting very soon, and those guys don't like to lose.”

STRAP YOURSELF IN AND FEEL THE G'S

Switzer is in no hurry to share the precise secrets of building nine-hundred-horse-capable Tiptronic transmissions, but the company is perfectly willing to build up transmissions for owners of other tuner cars, as well. “Of course, I have to believe that our P800 kit continues to be the ideal daily-driver/trackday package, but some clients have a comfortable working relationship with TechArt or 9ff. They still want a quicker Tiptronic car that they can turn up the boost on, though, and we can work with them to make that happen, and help them get the most out of the investment they've already made” says Switzer.

Drivers who participate in 0-100 or 1/8 mile dragstrip challenges may find Switzer P800 Tiptronic to be the perfect weapon; with the PCCB ceramic brakes and the 911’s traditionally brake-friendly weight distribution, 0-100-0 supremacy is all but assured.

Switzer's transmission upgrades start at 7990 USD, but anyone who wants to hit a hundred miles per hour before the most supercars make their way to sixty may consider it money well spent.

AT SPEED | NELSON LEDGES

I covered the Autoblog love for the new R911S last week, but I keep looking at the spec sheet in a rare blend of horror and disbelief.

Simply, Porsche's 2011 GT2 RS may be the fastest roadgoing car in the company's history, but Tym Switzer's new 900 hp GT2 R911S leaves the mighty GT2 RS for dead - both on the straights (with almost 50% more whp) and in the curves (with superior JRZ titanium 3-way adjustable suspension and ultralight Switzer signature wheels).

switzer superhero | vtg turbo upgrades

SWITZER P700/R750 VTG KIT | MOSCOW

The latest Porsche 911 's variable-vane turbochargers (VTG) are marvels of modern performance engineering that allow the 911's relatively small 6-cylinder “boxer” engine to deliver incredible horsepower, and help keep Porsche's flagship competitive with supercars boasting 10, 12, or even 16 cylinder engines. Even with nearly 500 hp from the factory, however, Porsche turbo owners still want more – more power, more speed, more everything. These performance enthusiasts demand superior performance, and have lofty expectations.

In order to meet those clients' lofty horsepower goals, it is necessary to increase the flow of air into the Porsche's engine – and since the primary function of any turbocharger is precisely to force air into an engine, upgrading the factory-provided VTG turbochargers is a logical step in the process of building additional power ... but Porsche clients don't want to sacrifice reliability to have more power.

This is the real problem faced by the modern tuner: clients want more performance, without more trips to the garage.

In order to provide a thrilling experience that is reliable enough to thrill time and time again, day or night, Monday through Sunday, we here at Switzer Performance have to deliver a package that is simply better than what the factory offers. We need an exhaust that flows more air. Intercoolers that remove more heat. We need turbos that are more efficient – that compress more air, and make less heat than the stock Porsche turbos.

How did we do it? By working closely with some of the industry's leading engineering firms and OE suppliers.

The close relationships we have with our development partners allows us to produce larger-than-stock compressor wheels with unique aero profiles specifically designed to achieve the airflow rates required for our P650/R680 and P700/R750 Porsche tuning packages. The new wheels are 11% larger than stock, and allow the Switzer turbos to move more air than the factory Porsche turbos, while generating less heat.

MORE AIR + LESS HEAT = MORE POWER + LESS MAINTENANCE

The Switzer VTGs have other competitive advantages, as well – all due to Switzer's unique ability to specify exactly the component characteristics required to meet our needs, as determined by our clients.

All of this is made possible through the incredible advances in engineering and design software, and lessons learned from decades of aggressive aftermarket turbocharger development. These are lessons that have taught us to build both power and reliability into a given system, and given us the ability to deliver cutting-edge performance upgrades that meet or exceed OEM-levels of component fit, finish, and quality.

“Quality” is a word we take very seriously. On that note, I'd like to point out that every VTG turbocharger Switzer upgrades is built to be as solidly reliable as the OEM component it replaces.

When we upgrade these turbochargers, every component is cleaned, refinished, and checked for proper tolerances. Every backing plate and compressor housing is CNC-machined for precise matching to our compressor wheels. We use only brand-new seals and bearings in our cartridges. We individually balance all shaft and wheel assemblies during assembly, then verify the final product with a high-precision cartridge balance, ensuring that there is no self-destructive behavior once the turbos are put into service. These are rebuilt cores, for sure, but they are so thoroughly reconditioned that it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to call them “new”.

    SWITZER TUNED VTG PORSCHE TURBO

Sadly, however, there are number of companies that are trying to sell simple wheel swaps with little or no regard to additional machining and quality-control procedures. They are telling their clients that these steps aren't necessary, swapping in some billet wheel, and calling it a day ... and there are a lot of billet wheel options on the market, being produced with reasonably-priced and readily-available alloys.

That's simply not the case here, as every compressor wheel we use is built with aerospace quality alloys specifically formulated for use in high-performance turbines. 5052 or 6061 aluminum simply will not perform consistently in the brutal, ultra-high temperature world inside a high-performance turbo housing, and even laymen can spot the cheaper wheels after a few heavy duty cycles. Combine objectively inferior alloys with anything less than best-practice machining and assembly programs, and it becomes easy to see why the resulting products tend to self-destruct over time.

Our client's cars are just not something we at Switzer are willing to take a chance on.

We demand and use only the best material technologies and manufacturing practices; and we work diligently to deliver products that perform better than anything else available anywhere. These VTGs certainly aren't the cheapest turbo upgrades available to Porsche enthusiasts, but they represent the best value for dollar argument in the aftermarket today: the best of everything, at a fair price.

Switzer VTG turbo upgrades are available as direct replacements for the factory VTGs, or as part of our comprehensive tuning solutions for Porsche's 997 TT and GT2. Contact Switzer Performance for more.

It's been a lazy Sunday for me so far, and this little Flash game has been my Soma all afternoon.

Don't let all this Sunday laziness fool you, however. It was a crazy week at the shop, and we have two (2) new 997 projects coming in before Valentine's Day, as well. Fun!

friday fun day - the thank you edition

Recently, I had the opportunity to take two of Switzer's most powerful automobiles out to the storied Nelson Ledges roadcourse in Warren, OH. Thanks to track manager Scott Lane, I was allowed to bring along photographer Dustin Woods, auto-journo Cherise LaPine, and - of course - the Great Jack Baruth, who pushed the 800 hp GT2 Porsche to speeds that would have put him, if not on the pole of the last SCCA ITE race held there, then very near the front row.

That's quite a feat, when you consider the Tymme-tuned GT2 was on street Michelins and Jack was taking the car's owner, David Kim, along for the ride, as well!

If you're into it, you can read more about Jack's impressions of the GT2 on Speed:Sport:Life. I can't do his (or LaPine's!) review of the day any sort of justice here.

I haven't said anything about Dustin's thoughts on the day, since - quite simply - I haven't read them, yet! I have, however, seen a few Great teaser pics he took of the cars on-track (above and below) and I can't wait to see the ones he'll actually be using in his review!

Once Dustin's article hits print, you can bet I'll link to it here - until then, I just want to offer my sincerest thanks to Cherise (who put in a heroic all-night drive to be a part of our little Nelson Ledges Friday Fun Day), Jack (who has proven time and again to be the best go-to guy in Ohio), and - of course! - Dustin himself, who drove out from Toronto TWICE to be a part of this. Thanks, as well, to JR and David, who trusted us with a few hundred g's worth of high-end automotive machinery.

Really, too many "thank yous" to go around, and I'm sure I'm forgetting people. All I can say is that I really had a blast. You guys are the best!

    carf*ckers

As many of you know, I put a lot of hours into this business. When I am at work I tend to work, and when I am at home I tend to work. When I am at bookstores I read car mags. When I am in bars I talk to the guy next to me about what he drives. When I sleep, I dream of galloping elephants.

    In short: I am obsessed.

The guys I work with are obsessed, too.

We are obsessive people. This is why we get along.

All the same, every once in a while we simply ask too much of ourselves, and run out of hours in a day. On those occasions, we make customers wait. We apologize and plead for patience, sacrificing animals to the supply gods, the shipping gods, and the coffee gods alike, each time praying that the next moment will bring us whatever part, bolt, screw, or "Boojie" that is missing to complete the task at hand.

Or maybe, that's just what we WANT you to think - and we're really just rubbing up on sexy, sexy cars while you're not looking!

    Ha! Ha-ha! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

That was a classic bit from The Kids in the Hall!

    Hope you enjoyed it.

    top speed | russia

Between posting some incredible, techno-tastic video of his Switzer-tuned 997tt tip obliterating most of Moscow's exotic cars and posting pictures with such creative titles as "SPI Bitches UGLY" (above), Mike from TTR is quickly becoming one of my favorite people.

These pics are from a "top speed" event held in Russia this past weekend, where Michael claims he "killed" a any number of tuned Benzos, Vipers, and even a Heffner-built turbo GT similar to the one pictured HERE.

Given this pic (below), I can believe it.

Keep in mind, Mike's driving a Switzer 700/750 997TT Tip car that, earlier this month, ran a 10.4 second 1/4 mile on 93 octane. On a 10.6 second run stateside, a similar car pulled 1.5 g's at launch.

So, yeah - I'm a believer! You can see more great pics of Russian exotics (and not-so ugly girls) from this event HERE, HERE, and HERE.

    (switzer + russia) / techno = gold

Switzer's Moscow agent is at it again, and this time it looks like someone slipped him a copy of Final Cut!

I have to say, the combination of synthesized techno music and oh-so-Soviet-era black and white fonts really make it for me. It's not quite an afternoon with the techno twins (Claude and Viter! Woot!) but the ultra-kickass nature of this video speaks for itself, with Tym Switzer's tiptronic beasties going to town on some of Russia's fastest contenders.

    Enjoy!

Russia, as my new fried Mike has recently proved, is a crazy place. It's not Canada crazy or Japan crazy, though - it's its own special brand of crazy. Possibly potato-Vodka-crazy.

    Not sure.

Regardless, though, this latest clip from Mr. Fedianov is a great example of what happens when there's a drag race happening anywhere near Mike's Switzer-tuned 997 tiptronic Porsche.

    800 hp gt2 porsche

That's right, kiddies - Switzer Performance is putting the finishing touches on a new 800 hp pump-gas package for Porsche's latest 997 GT2 turbo.

    [insert crazy-maniacal Pierre laugh here]

The dyno curve puts this GT2 just under Switzer's epic P800 Nissan in terms of raw hp, and just over that car in terms of righteous torque (just look at that curve - LOOK!), which can only mean one thing ... 800 HP PORSCHE | GODZILLA GRUDGE MATCH!

I'm getting ahead of myself, of course - but not by much. Not by much.

Expect an official Switzer press release in the next few days, along with final output figures and pricing.

    10-second tip

Make no mistake, Tym Switzer builds some impressive cars.

Take, for example, the 997TT Porsche shown, above. Fitted with Switzer's 700/750 Tiptronic package, the car is capable of 10-second 1/4 mile runs that seem almost effortless ... on street tires ... on pump gas.

    Check the timeslip for yourself.

I asked Tym if he wanted to do a press release on the car - which, incidentally, is about 2 tenths quicker in the quarter than a Bugatti Veyron.

His response? "Nah, a 10-second car is no big deal."

Tym is a sick, sick man.

    switzer sledgehammer

In the classic Simpsons episode "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?", Homer demands a car that is "powerful, like a gorilla", and insists that when he start the engine, children cry and women think the world is coming to an end.

It may not look like the Homer, but Tym Switzer's awe-inspiring 997 Turbo Sledgehammer is every bit an awesome, power-mad silverback in a sea of chimp-tuned Porsches.

I've written about Tym before (HERE), but this is the first time I've been able to post one of Switzer Performance Innovation's official press releases (below).

    Enjoy!

Oberlin, OH - Switzer Announces SLEDGEHAMMER 1000 hp Porsche Conversion Package

Tym Switzer has been quietly running Switzer Performance Innovations (SPI) in Oberlin, Ohio for several years, building show-quality exhausts and bolt-on performance products for twin-turbo Porsche 996 and 997 models.

With his latest project, Tym and the crew at SPI wanted to test the limits of what would be possible with stock 997 internals. “When the customer first came to me with his 997, we talked a lot about about pushing the limits the new engine and what might be possible using stock internals. I had already been inside the 997 turbo engines, and felt that 700 wheel horsepower seemed well within reach on pump fuel, and that we might be able to go a bit further.”

That “bit further” eventually led to what Switzer calls the SLEDGEHAMMER. Named after candid comment from an SPI tech, the SLEDGEHAMMER is a bolt-on performance package for 997 twin-turbo Porsches that delivers over 850 all-wheel horsepower on race fuel. That's over 1000 hp at the crank!

Getting Bugatti-baiting performance figures from a bolt-on prepared 997 is no easy task, though. Switzer explains he and his crew “have always prided ourselves on attention to detail and delivering exactly what we promise to our customers. We have a saying around here: performance, not excuses. So during the original SLEDGEHAMMER build we looked at every part of the system, constantly metering and testing every component, on our in-house chassis dyno.”

A finished Switzer SLEDGEHAMMER is certainly an amazing car. Switzer reports that (despite backing off the throttle early) the first SLEDGEHAMMER went almost 195 mph at the Texas mile. Additional performance figures read like the stuff of legend: consistent 0-60 times in the mid 2's, less than 5 seconds to go from 60-130 mph, and 9.8-second quarter mile elapsed times with trap speeds regularly in excess of 145 mph. “With performance like that, these cars really speak for themselves - I have another one on the dyno now, and expect to post the results of those runs shortly.”

In addition to extensive ECU tuning, the SLEDGEHAMMER package includes SPI's in-house developed headers and sport exhaust, as well as SPI's MONSTER intercooler package and SPI-massaged GT30R turbos. More details on Switzer's SLEDGEHAMMER conversion can be found on SPI's website. The SLEDGEHAMMER package retails for 49990USD, and is available through SPI.

    Contact SPI for more information.

    beep-beep

This is an actual, customer video of a 9.79 sec. 1/4 mile run in one of Tym Switzer's 997 Sledgehammer Porsches.

I'm a bit at a loss for words seeing this launch from this angle, since the only place I've ever seen acceleration like that is the old Bugs Bunny/Road Runner cartoons. Still, I wonder if I should take some issue with that name??

Ah well - I know Switzer to be an ace guy (he's a RENN dealer/distributor, after all) so I won't take the "Sledgehammer" name as a direct attack on either the RENN or AMG (for now).

    9.79 ... scary.
